the plan

The transport hub aims to create a traffic free zone for the Market Square. Through the commissioning process and final artworks the councils want to raise awareness and knowledge of both art and environmental issues, and to encourage the use of sustainable transport such as trains, buses, bicycles, skateboarding and walking.

Aims of the commission:

  • To increase understanding and support for public art in Aylesbury Vale and Buckinghamshire
  • To increase the capacity of both Councils to initiate and develop high quality public art commissions
  • To improve the skills and knowledge of local and regional artists in public art and therefore increase their ability to win commissions for public art and their ability to deliver high quality work
  • To maintain and improve the built and natural environments of the Hub and the district as a whole (in terms of design, function and usability i.e. through increased safety and reduced pollution), and improve the quality of transport facilities and services
  • To promote the use of sustainable modes of transport (trains, buses, bicycles and use of footpaths for walking, rollerblading, skateboarding, non-motorised scooters, etc.)
  • To engage community across the County in public art and other creative activities
  • To increase awareness and understanding of environmental issues
  • To increase community involvement in the design and management of the built and natural environment

The public artwork might also:

  • Create tie-ins with local and regional tourism, highlighting places of interest including Conservation areas (i.e. green spaces, and heritage sites)
  • Highlight interesting facts about the area, such as natural assets
  • Offer information about related local and regional policies i.e. the Biodiversity Action Plan
